What the Students Have to Say!!!!

Hello Parents and Students. We have started rocks and minerals in Science. The whole class is looking forward to learn about rocks and minerals! Students are really looking forward to make rock candy and volcano's! We also have started geomtrey in math. Some students have found it easy some have found is hard. To make us understand geometry better, in art we made geo-nets.  Students got to design and color the geo-nets. Students have understood geometry! Now in art we have started Kandinsky art! Kandinsky art is five circles and made out of pastels. Thank you!

Procedural Writing

Be sure to think about what topic you will be writing about for your procedural writing assignment.
We will discuss these tomorrow in class.
It should be a procedure for something with at least 5 steps.

*Think back to our example we did in class today as we watched 'The Little Red Hen' and all the steps we had to include in order to make bread!

ANGLES!!!!

We've started our unit on Geometry and are learning about measuring angles.
Here is some extra practice: http://www.ixl.com/math/practice/grade-4-measure-angles-with-a-protractor

Remember:

RIGHT angles: are always 90 degrees
ACUTE angles: are less than 90 degrees (tip: acute angles are 'cute' and 'small' so they are less than 90 degrees)
OBTUSE angles: more than 90 degrees

Still Need Extra Help???

Ms.Virji is available before school on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8:30am in our portable if you need extra help.  Please be on time.

Thanks =)

Habitat Projects are Complete!!!!

After much dedication the students have now completed their paper plate habitat projects.  What's even more exciting is later this week we will write a class letter to Barbara Reid to explain to her how we were inspired by her plasticine art work.  We are hoping that Barbara Reid will write back to us!  Check out these awesome habitats! Students created city habitats, gardens, forests, beaches, rivers and ponds! The work is PHENOMENAL!!!!

Comics!!!

We've been exploring comics in our classroom!  Comics are humourous and can be silly.  Today the students worked on either being the authors or the illustrators of a comic.  Tomorrow they create their own comics from scratch!!!

Thank You to Our Police Officers

As we all know the past week has been a somber one for the police force of Toronto.  This week Mr.Battaglia encouraged classes to create Thank You cards for our community police officers.  As a class, the students in portable 3 brainstormed about how the world would be different if there were no police officers.  We then discussed why we are thankful to have police officers.  Below are some pictures of the thank you card we created.  This card will be submitted to our local officers.

Update on happenings in Portable #3!

As we wrap up our unit in Science on Habitats and Communities - the students are working hard on completing their final task of creating a habitat in pairs.

Each pair of students was inspired by the works of Barbara Reid - a famous author popular for creating illustrations made out of plasticine.

The students integrated their artistic skills and knowledge of habitats to design their own habitat on a paper plate solely constructed out of plasticine.

Projects are still underway! Stay tuned for updates on our wonderful work!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alberto Giacometti was a Swiss sculptor, painter, and surrealist who was best known for his elongated sculptures of human figures.  He created thin sculptures by using metal.
In our art project, we re-created Giacometti’s work by using a variety of artistic techniques such as pinching, squeezing, and sculpting.
To re-create his work, we first made charcoal sketches of what we wanted our sculptures to look like.  Then we created our sculptures by using pipe cleaners, foil paper, newspaper and plasticine.
In this project we focused on the following Art curriculum expectations:

D1. Creating and Presenting: apply the creative process to produce a variety of two- and three-dimensional art works, using elements, principles, and techniques of visual arts to communicate feelings, ideas, and understandings;

D1.4 use a variety of materials, tools, and techniques to determine solutions to design challenges

Check out our amazing re-creations of Giacometti's Work!!!! Our Work is on display in the School Library!!!  Way to go Grade 4's!!!!
